In 2013, AlloSource began a 10-year partnership with the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors, pledging an annual financial contribution to fund their scholarship program. For more than 35 years, the Phoenix Society has worked with survivors, families, healthcare professionals and the fire industry to support recovery from burns, improve the quality of burn care and prevent burn injuries. Here is the story of a 2015 Education Grant Recipient.

Daniel feels that his burn injury taught him he could overcome any challenge and reach his goals in life. With that sentiment in mind, he is working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Data Analytics and hopes to become a career firefighter.

A very hard-worker, Danny currently holds a job as an insurance agent, is working towards his degree and serves as a volunteer firefighter. Having recovered from a burn injury has already helped him relate to other people enduring difficult situations.

Whether I encounter these people in firefighting/EMT, at burn camp, everyday life, and even in the news, my experience allows me a perspective into other people’s struggles that I wouldn’t have otherwise,” he said.

Working as a volunteer firefighter provides invaluable experience and reinforced Danny’s chosen career path.

Though being a volunteer firefighter has been quite the commitment, it has given me great experience and reassurance that firefighting is a true passion of mine,” Danny said.

As one of 12 children, he credits his family with motivating him to do better, and hopes he can also serve as inspiration to his siblings.

An ongoing goal of mine is to make my role models proud of what they motivated me to accomplish, and possibly, in doing so, motivate them in return.”

With his role models in mind, Danny constantly pushes himself to work harder and do better. His future in firefighting not only provides an opportunity to help others every day, but to pay it forward for his friends and family.

They encourage me and inspire me, and I hope to someday emulate all of the qualities so that I can have the same effect on others who are struggling and searching for something or someone to believe in.”
