The 2014 Transplant Games of America are gearing up to raise awareness for organ and tissue donation. The Games, an annual multi-sport event for recipients of a life-saving transplant, will take place July 11 – 15, 2014 in Houston, Texas.
What began as an athletic way to highlight the importance of donation has evolved into a great opportunity for donor families and recipients to interact. Though donor families may not meet the recipient who received their loved one’s organ or tissue, they are all able to share stories and appreciate the impact of transplantation.
The Games include medaling events like basketball, track and field, golf, swimming, ballroom dancing and more. Special events such as donor-recipient bowling, rock climbing and Zumba will also be featured.
Registration information and participant requirements are available on the Transplant Games of America website.
The American Association of Tissue Banks is offering scholarships for organ, corneal, and tissue recipients, as well as living donors and donor family members. Information about the scholarships can be found here.
